Did you know that Ragdoll cats have a very long childhood? A ragdoll can take up to 3 years before reaching feline maturity (adulthood). This is when they are considered fully matured both physically and in terms cognitive development.
The Ragdoll’s silky coat is dense and requires regular grooming to stay in good condition. Ragdolls come in three patterns: Colourpoint, Bi-colour and Mitted. The recognised Ragdoll colours are seal, blue, chocolate, lilac, red and cream, along with the tortoiseshell and tabby patterns
Ragdolls are loving, smart and playful. They show affection to their people by greeting them, following them around, sitting in their laps and snuggling in bed. Ragdoll cats can also learn tricks and certain behaviors with positive reinforcement.
As one of the world’s largest domestic cats the Ragdoll is believed to have originated in California. There are several opinions on the breeding pair that were responsible for creating the Ragdoll breed
Ragdolls are mostly a loyal breed, known to relax like a doll in the arms of anyone who holds them.
Ann Baker, a breeder who lived in California during the 1960s, is credited with creating the Ragdoll. Baker took a domestic longhaired white female that was found running wild in her neighborhood, and bred her with another long-haired cat.
The resulting kittens were the progenitors of the Ragdoll breed. By selecting for traits like a friendly personality and long, plush fur, Baker eventually produced the big, soft kitty we know and love today – RAGDOLL
It is a relatively new breed
Ragdolls, a name based on the cats’ tendency to loll in a lap or be carried around without resistance.
One of the cats in the original Ragdoll bloodline may have had Siamese-like markings, or Baker mated that first cat with Birman, Burmese, or Persian cats. However, since nobody quite knows which cat breeds Baker used to create the Ragdoll, the origin of the breed’s classic color-pointed coat remains a bit of a mystery.
The Cat Fanciers Association began registering Ragdolls in 1993, and they achieved championship status in 2000.
The Ragdoll cat is second only to the Exotic in popularity, according to the 2017 Cat Fanciers’ Association registration stats. In The International Cat Association, it ranks second following the Bengal.

Ragdoll cats are mostly known for their large size, their bright sparkling blue eyes, a semi-long silky rabbit-like fur, and a docile and people loving personality. They say Ragdoll cats act more like dogs than cats.
While some breeds can be traced back hundreds or thousands of years, Ragdoll cats only date back to the early 1960s. Ragdoll cats acquired their name because, when held, they go limp and become completely relaxed and floppy, like a feline ragdoll.
There are SIX basic colours for ragdolls : Seal, Blue, Chocolate, Lilac, Red and Cream.
Seal
Seal is a dark brown colour that is almost black. A seal ragdoll has deep dark brown colouring on the points. The body colour can vary from an even smoky light to medium brown, that gets darker with age. There may be some gradually shading into a lighter colour on the belly and chest.
Blue
Blue, a diluted form of seal, is a dark bluish grey colour. A blue ragdoll has grey-bluish colouring on the points. The body colour is a lighter platinum, bluish grey tone, shading gradually to an even more light tone toward the stomach and the chest. Paw pads and nose leather has a dark blue-grey tone.
Chocolate
Chocolate is a dark chocolate brown colour. A chocolate ragdoll has dark brown (like milk chocolate) colouring on points but the body coat will keep its ivory white colour, shading, if at all, towards the color of the points. Paw pads have a salmon pink colour and the nose leather has a burnt rose tone.
Lilac
Lilac, a diluted form of Chocolate, is a lighter shade of blue grey colour with a slight pinkish tinge. A lilac ragdoll has lilac grey or pinkish colouring in the points. It seems like the dilute pigment permits the flesh tone to show through. The body colour of the lilac ragdoll is an even milk white colour shading, if any, towards the color of the points. The paw pads have a coral pink tone and the nose leather has a translucent old lilac hue.
Red (aka Flame)
Red is the red colour you may have seen with most reddish cats (apricot colour). A red ragdoll has a deep orange red colouring of the points. The body colour of the red ragdoll is a warm, even, creamy white colour, shading, if any, towards the same tone as points. Paw pads and the nose leather have a hot pink tone.
Cream
Cream, a diluted form of red, is a noticeable lighter shade of red. A cream ragdoll has a cream (deep to pale cream) colouring of the points. The body colour of the cream ragdoll is an even white colour all over, shading, if any, towards the same colour of the points. The paw pads and the nose leather have a rosy pink tone.
