Putrajaya Tour: Putrajaya Wetland Park

Taman Wetlands means Wetlands Park

The park is the largest constructed freshwater wetlands in the tropics and boasts a 138-hectare Wetland Park and sprawling 1,977-hectare wetland areas. The wetlands have become a popular eco-tourism destination.

Several species of local marshland birds and water birds like the little egret, green heron and cinnamon bittern have been spotted here, so bring binoculars if you plan on bird-watching.

Putrajaya Wetland Park Map

The wetlands perform 3 vital functions:

Flood mitigation

It retains and stores storm water and spreads it out over a wide flat area.

Water filtration

The intercepted urban run-off is filtered through a series of catchment cells, where marsh plants trap sediment and pollutants. Toxic substances such as pesticides, herbicides and metals are removed through complex bacterial and chemical processes. In this way you could say that the wetlands act as the kidneys of Putrajaya.

Habitat creation

The resulting filtered water becomes a functioning wetland, providing a home to various plants and organisms which form the base of the food chain, sustaining a biodiversity of invertebrates, frogs, reptiles, fish and water birds.

Read:

Putrajaya Wetlands is divided into 2 components – Taman Wetland Putrajaya and Lake Recreational Centre. Taman Wetland Putrajaya is very much the public face of the wetlands and serves as a gateway to Putrajaya Wetlands while the Lake Recreational Centre serves as a water recreational spot.

Among the facilities and attractions provided in the park are Bicycle Rental, Tram Ride, Duffy Boat, Canoe, Kayak, Rowing, Paddle Boat, Binoculars and Wetland Park Camping Centre.

Taman Wetlands also has site facilities like Padang Semarak, Padang Merbuk, Taman Palma, Flamingo Pond, BBQ site and Wakaf that people can rent for Weddings, Sports Day, Family Day, and other corporate or private events.
