Ponggal Festival

The Hindu celebrations of Deepavali and Thaipusam often steal the limelight from Ponggal festival. Pongal is a Hindu thanksgiving festival traditionally dedicated to the Sun God Surya to thank the solar deity for a bountiful harvest. It is usually celebrated in mid-January and is considered an important date to mark the harvest festival.

The word “Ponggal” is derived from the Tamil word “pongu”, which literally means “boil over”. In Ponggal celebrations, rice is the staple dish during this three-day festivity. Rice with milk is cooked over firewood in traditional clay pots until the rice bubbles over – a symbol of abundance, peace and happiness.

On the second day, better known as Mattu ponggal, cows are worshiped and garlanded with fresh flowers. Kanni ponggal, which is the third day of celebrations, involves single adults scouting for potential partners. Many young people will find their match at this sacred time.

Many Hindu temples nationwide will hold their own commemoration of the day.
